New Hire Kit
The moment a candidate signs is always the most exciting — but how can you sustain that energy and excitement through their very first day? At Blend, I partnered with Design to create new hire kits. These were mailed out to all new hires the day the signed, and we included a personal note from the team, as well.

Blend Field Guide for new hires; coasters and pins for the first day
Blend Field Guide for New Hires
One of the hardest parts of starting a new job is learning a company’s culture, history, and inside jokes. I created this Field Guide, along with my Design Partner, to help new hires ramp up culturally. The full link to the content can be found here.
Blend Booklet
Information on Life at Blend, open jobs, the company, funding, etc. We handed these out at recruiting events and had them on hand for all events at HQ, for candidates to read through, etc.
Blend Booklet -- GHC Edition
For the Grace Hopper Celebration, we made a special edition booklet focused on internships, new grads, and women/female-identifying individuals.
Fanny Packs for GHC
The Grace Hopper Celebration was in Orlando that year, so we were all planning to go to Disneyworld. When I think of vintage Disney trips with my family, only one thing came to mind: fanny packs. On both mom and dad. These also happen to be extraordinarily useful for a big conference when you’re constantly shaking hands and running around, but need anti-bacterial gel and a pen with you at all times :)

Blend, The Moth, and The Atlantic
A series of stories, in the style of The Moth, about being a parent in tech. Presented at The Atlantic’s “Inclusion in Tech” summit in 2017. I came up with the concept, coached the speakers, and helped produce the piece. Definitely one of my favorite things I’ve worked on.
Blend Neighborhoods Tote
For Lesbians Who Tech, I wanted to create something that showcased Blend’s true commitment to diversity, and I love this Harvey Milk quote. I also included a bit of a pun — you might recognize those Victorian homes as the Painted Ladies. This tote was a big hit, and we re-used the design for University Recruiting as well.

LWT Postcard (Front)
Diversity is incredibly important to Blend, and one way we support D&I initiatives is by attending the Lesbians Who Tech conference in SF every year. For this year, we wanted collateral to hand out to conference attendees, but we wanted it to feel very SF, and like something you might actually send a friend!
We thought the Painted Ladies in a rainbow palette would be a fun way to allude to one of our favorite SF landmarks, and the key demographic for the event :) We also thought the quote from Harvey Milk was a perfect embodiment of what Blend is trying to do — bring neighborhoods together,

rolled t-shirt + custom tag
We designed custom tags to make giving out tees even easier at recruiting events - keeps everything looking neat, including the booth.
Cisco SF skyline tees
This was a t-shirt I worked on with our Design team, as part of our re-brand from Meraki to Cisco SF. We wanted to emphasize the fact that we were in the city, as opposed to the South Bay :)
recruiting postcard
Postcards for MobiCom, an academic conference we sponsored.
Meraki Summer Camp flask
Meraki Summer Camp seal and engraved flasks, for our engineering trip to a Dude Ranch in Wyoming. I packaged these with a Field Notes notebook, pencil, and small bottle of whiskey, and left a goodie bag on the bed of each event attendee. It might be the best thing I've ever done.
tech talk poster
Poster from our Fall 2014 Tech Talk Series.
Cisco SF recruiting booth
We reimagined what a career fair and tradeshow booth might look like by ditching the traditional desk and seated chair setup, instead replacing it with a multi-dimensional backdrop and interactive space for people to walk through. We used the podium at front to store our schwag, which created a really clean effect (t-shirts get messy!)

Meraki + Mission map
In recruiting folks from outside of the Bay Area, and in particular undergrads, you're selling not only your company but the city of San Francisco. I created this map as a visual way to show off the Mission neighborhood Meraki called home, and all of the neat coffee shops, lunch spots, and bars a future employee might frequent.
This is a zoomed in view. See full inserts here.
Meraki business cards
After being acquired by Cisco, we wanted to differentiate ourselves from the larger corporate entity via every part of our brand presence. That included business cards. These were intended to feel youthful, hip, organic, and above all to be simple.
The Neighborhood: SOMA // Nick Waterhouse
Partnered with Yours Truly to create video series for Audyssey’s music and culture blog (now defunct; once called The Neighborhood). Our products were named after SoMa (SF) and the Lower East Side (NY), and we interviewed artists from and hosted concerts in these neighborhoods.

Mission district hoodies
Meraki, in its startup form, was located in the Mission district of SF. We wanted to celebrate our neighborhood by creating this hoodie for the team.
Women Who Code t-shirts
Tees custom made for a Women Who Code event we hosted at Meraki HQ.
employee happiness
Happy employees --> happy referrals. (Here's the first 20 engineers at Meraki, celebrating back in 2012).
recruiting weekends
We bring our University Hire candidates out to SF in batches of 15-25 people, and not only have them do a day of technical interviews and tour of the office, but also take them on a tour of SF (aka, Sunday Fun Day). For many, they've never even visited California, so we're selling them on how cool both Meraki and San Francisco are. This fosters 1-on-1 interactions and allows both the eng team and potential candidates to get a feel for each other.
engineeramid
I wish I could take credit for this as a team building activity, but I walked out of our Maui vacation house at exactly the right time to witness such magic.
We take our entire dev team on a trip every year as part of our employee happiness program - this was from Maui in 2013.
